Grades 3-5: Developing Computational Fluency in Rational Number

In this Grades 3-5 Think Tank, educators will explore how to develop computational fluency in rational number through short 5-7 minute reasoning routines. These routines are designed to build critical connections between core big ideas and strategies in rational number. Participants will also examine guided minilessons and games that foster efficient, accurate, and flexible strategy use.

  • use specific routines and lessons to develop computational fluency.
  • use structures for developing students’ capacity to communicate their strategies.
  • use key pedagogical moves to improve math learning, communication, and social interactions in their classrooms.

PARTICIPANTS WILL LEAVE WITH:

  • write-ups of the routines and lessons shared in the Think Tank.
  • specific pedagogical tools to use in their classrooms to support students’ reasoning and talk.
