Grades 2-5: Foundations of Fractions – Routines for Building Connections between Whole Number and Fractions

How do we help students build thinking structures in rational number? One way is to help them understanding how big ideas and strategies in multiplication and division are foundational for reasoning in rational number. In this one-day Think Tank for Grades 2-5, participants will have an opportunity to explore a variety of short (5-7 minute) reasoning routines designed to build critical connections between core big ideas and strategies in the number strand.

PARTICIPANTS WILL EXPLORE:

  • Specific lessons, routines, and games to develop math reasoning and communication.
  • Structures for developing talk in their classrooms.
  • Key pedagogical moves that they can use to improve math learning, communication, and social interactions in their classrooms.

PARTICIPANTS WILL LEAVE WITH:

  • Specific teaching tools to enhance math teaching in their classrooms.
  • Write-ups of all the lesson materials used in the Think Tank.
