Using Games in K-2 to Develop Computational Fluency

What is computational fluency and how does it develop? In this one-day PD, we will explore how a games routine can be used to develop students’ fluency with the building blocks (aka the basic facts). Participants will explore a number of different counting, addition, and subtraction games and consider the mathematical effectiveness of each game. For example, is it a low-level game that is focused primarily on skill or is it a game that can develop deep mathematical reasoning and fluency? Video and transcripts will be used to illustrate how games develop fluency, mathematical reasoning, and students’ ability to communicate their thinking with clarity.

PARTICIPANTS WILL EXPLORE:

  • the difference between automaticity and fluency.
  • how a games routine can be used to develop computational fluency.
  • ways to assess the quality of a game (Is it skill-based or does it develop deeper kinds of mathematical reasoning)?

PARTICIPANTS WILL LEAVE WITH:

  • tools for analyzing games.
  • a repertoire of games they can use to develop specific strategies in early number, addition, and subtraction.
  • a write-up of the Just-Right Games routine that can be implemented in their classrooms.
