Using High-Leverage Routines to Develop Multiplicative Thinking

Many children who struggle with big ideas in whole number, especially in multiplication and division, are challenged to understand more complex ideas based on this content. Developing students’ ability to reason multiplicatively is essential for their understanding of rational number, which itself is a pathway to algebra and higher-level mathematics.

In this workshop, we will share a learning trajectory that can be used to support students who are struggling to grasp big ideas in multiplication and division. Shared materials will include short, high-leverage routines and guided minilessons. Video and transcripts will be used to highlight how a consist focus on big ideas and the use of mathematical models can develop students’ reasoning and support their ability to communicate their thinking with clarity.

PARTICIPANTS WILL EXPLORE:

  • ways to assess students’ understanding of multiplication and division big ideas and strategies.
  • lessons and routines designed to support the development of multiplicative reasoning.
  • the role mathematical models play in developing deep mathematical reasoning.

PARTICIPANTS WILL LEAVE WITH:

  • a learning trajectory of big ideas and strategies critical for multiplicative reasoning.
  • lessons and routines they can use in their own classrooms to support students’ understanding of multiplication and division.
  • a set of assessments that can help them work strategically with students and design lessons that meet their developmental needs.
